FC does not bill insurance for couples counseling.

If FC is not credentialed by your insurance provider, then Fern Counseling/Fern Therapy Services/Kelly Fern/Brad Fern/Elaina Vig/Patrick Robinson/Lance Hauge is an out-of-network provider, which means that it does not bill your insurance company directly. If you use out-of-network benefits, you would pay the cost of service at the time of session, FC would provide a receipt, and you would submit the receipt to your insurance company for reimbursement. Please contact your insurance provider to ask if your benefits include reimbursement for out-of-network providers.

Benefits to therapy without insurance

1. A greater degree of privacy. Your insurance provider requires therapists to share your diagnosis, goals, and treatment plan. We often see clients who prefer that this information is not accessible to other entities.

(People who tend to want a greater degree of privacy are doctors, first responders and military personnel, people who need secret and top secret clearances for their jobs, public figures, people addressing sexual or relationship concerns, and people working through past traumatic experiences. )

2. You can seek individual therapy without being given a mental health diagnosis. When you use insurance, therapists are required to give you a mental health diagnosis. This diagnosis will be a permanent part of your medical record, which can impact future insurance costs, life insurance, job opportunities, etc.

3. You can seek couples therapy without being given a mental health diagnosis. Couples therapy is generally not covered by most insurance plans. Fern Counseling does not bill insurance for couples counseling.

If you need support but don’t want a mental health diagnosis, paying out of pocket is an option exercised by some clients.

Sliding Scale

Each Fern Counseling therapist accepts a limited number of clients on a sliding scale basis. Please inquire about need-based pricing during your initial contact.
